إن الاعتناء بالإسناد منقبة عظيمة، وخصيصة من خصائص أمتنا. وقد جرت عادة كثير من المحدثين وأصحاب الأسانيد، والإجازات أن يعمد أحدهم إلى جمع تراجم شيوخه وأسانيدهم في الحديث خاصة وفي العلوم عامة، فيذكر ما تلقاه عن هؤلاء الشيوخ سماعاً وإجازة، مبيناً الأسانيد العالية والنازلة مع ذكر الموافقات العوالي، والأبدال والمساواة وغيرها من الأسانيد العالية، والفوائد، فيجمع ذلك في ثبت أو مشيخة، أو معجم.
من هؤلاء العلامة المحدث حسن بن عمر الشطي، الذي ألف هذا الثبت، وذكر فيه شيوخه وأسانيدهم لصحيح البخاري، والحديث المسلسل بالدمشقيين، وحديث الرحمة المسلسل بالأولية. وقد عرف عن الشيخ الشطي أنه تلقى العلم والحديث عن عدد من كبار شيوخ الشام والحجاز والعراق دراية ورواية، فأقبل عليه الطلبة لتلقي الفقه والفرائض والحديث وغيرها من العلوم دراسة وإجازة.
