تتناول هذه الدراسة حقبة زمنية غامضة من تاريخ العراق وهي فترة القرن الثامن عشر حيث كان العراق جزءاً من الإمبراطورية العثمانية.
وتركز الدراسة على تجارة البصرة مع كل من الهند وبغداد وإيران وحلب والجزيرة العربية وتداعيات هذه التجارة على التطورات السياسية والنفوذ البريطاني في المدينة".
حيث يتناول الفصل الأول مسحاً عريضاً لتأريخ البصرة، ثم يلحق بمناقشة للدور الكبير الذي لعبه ويلعبه موقعها الجغرافي، كذلك ينظر إلى بنية المدينة وطبيعة سكانها والإدارة في القرن الثامن عشر، ويخلص الفصل إلى أن البصرة كانت آخذة بالإنحدار في نهاية القرن، وفي الفصل الثاني، يتركز الإنتباه على الطبيعة الشاملة لتجارة الإستيراد والتصدير في البصرة، مع إيلاء الإنتباه إلى أرقام رحلات السفن البحرية، ومرة أخرى، تشير الشواهد إلى هبوط تجارتها في نهاية القرن برغم ما شهدته من إرتفاع قبيل ذلك بقليل.
لا يجري تحليل الأسباب التي دفعت إلى هذا الهبوط حتى الفصل الثالث، وهنا يجري التحرّي عن مختلف الشبكات التجارية التي تربط البصرة بها، وبشأن كل واحدة من هذه الشبكات، تُعطى المعلومات التي تتعلق بالتبادل التجاري، وطراز كل منها والتحولات البنيوية التي تؤثر فيها صعوداً أو نزولاً.
وفي الفصلين الرابع والخامس يُعار الإهتمام إلى الدور الذي بات ينهض به كبار تجار الجملة في البصرة، وتأكيد المصالح المتناقضة لطوائف التجار الرئيسة، والتي تعكس شبكات التجارة المختلفة التي كانت تنشط في إطارها.
