تحاول صفحات هذا الكتاب خط انتقال الفكر الهلليني على يد الفلاسفة المسلمين والمفكرين اليهود الذين عاشوا ف، وسط إسلامي، ومن ثم تبين كيف أن الفكر قد تحور في انتقاله خلال فترة تطور الجماعة الإسلامية، وكيف حور هو نفسه الأفكار الإسلامية، ثم كيف أن هذا الفكر قد استقدم ليؤثر في ثقافة العصور الوسطى المسيحية اللاتينية.
وهكذا تبدل مظهر الفكر الهليني الخارجي خلال قرون من حياته على حدة، حتى أنه بدا نوعاً جديداً من الحياة الفكرية، وأصبح عاملاً مشوشاً حوّل الفلسفة المسيحية إلى مسالك جديدة، ومال إلى الفكاك من التراث اللاهوتي للكنيسة، وقد مباشرة إلى النهضة التي سدت الضربة القاضية لثقافة العصور الوسطى، ولكنها قليلاً ما تبدلت من جوهر مادتها الحقيقي. إذ إنها استعملت المنون ذاتها وعالجت إلى حد بعيد نفس المسائل التي كانت متداولة في الإسكلائية الأولى التي كانت قد تطورت مستقلة في العالم المسيحي اللاتيني، وهكذا سيكون جهد هذا الكتاب منصب على قص أثر تاريخ الفكر الإسلامي في العصور الوسطى لتبين العناصر المشتركة بينه وبين التعاليم المسيحية ولتعدد نقاط التباعد بينها.
