قد لا يقدر أي متابع للحياة الثقافية والفكرية في العالم الإسلامي أن ينكر ظهور فريق في الوسط العلمي الديني يمتاز عن المؤسسة الدينية بأكثر من جهة، ألا وهو فريق المثقفين الدينيين، فقد تكون هذا الفريق عندما ظهرت المناهج الجديدة في التفكير في العالم الإسلامي متزامنة مع لا مبالاة نسبية مارستها المؤسسة الدينية في حق هذه المناهج، مما فرض تبلور ظاهرة جديدة في الحياة الثقافية هي ظاهرة المثقف الديني أو المثقف المتدين. ومن أجل فهم هذه الظاهرة كان لا بد من تعريف المثقف عموماً وتحديده وصولاً إلى تحديد المثقف المسلم في العالم الإسلامي. من هذا المنطلق تأتي هذه الدراسة حيث يدخل الباحث في تحديد حجم المثقف في دراسة تتجاوز البعد المعرفي الإبيستمولوجي لتلامس البعد الإجتماعي والسياسي لإبراز حجم تأثير هذه الشريحة اليوم. ولبيان عناصر القوة الفاعلة فيها، ولأي محور من محاور الفعل الفكري والإجتماعي ينتمي عمل هذه المجموعة، وماذا يمكن أن يُترقب منها وعلى أي صعيد بالإضافة إلى ذلك تجيب الدراسة عن أسئلة معقمة حول هذه الظاهرة بأسلوب علمي دقيق. وبغاية التعرف إلى المثقف المسلم، ومعرفة مسؤولياته وحاجاته كلها. لم يغب عن الباحث إستحضار العنصر التاريخي في البحث، إذ من المفترض تناول ظاهرة المثقف المسلم في القرنين الأخيرين والإجابة عن السؤالين التاليين: هل نجحت أم أخفقت؟ وما هي النتائج التي قدمتها هذه الشريحة لمجتمع المسلمين بالضبط؟ من هنا فإن هذا الرصد التاريخي لهذا الأمر من شأنه أن يقدم للقارئ صورة واقع واقعية عن دور المثقف وإنجازاته وعن واقعه، ويجعله أقرب لفهم هذه الظاهرة، ظاهرة المثقف الديني كما يجعله أكثر معرفة بالمثقف بصورة مباشرة.
إن أحد المسائل المهمة التي يحتاجها كا من المثقف والمجتمع في المرحلةالراهنة هي إعادة النظر في تعريف ودور المثقف، باعتبار أن المثقف كغيره كائن تعرضه التغيرات والتحولات مفهوماً ووجودا.
