يعالج هذا الكتاب "قضيةً شديدة الأهمّية والخطورة أيضاً، إذ إنّ "ردّ الحديث" من المسائل الوعِرَة التي من شأنها أن تُبطل القبول والعمل في جملةٍ من الأحاديث ربما وقع قَبولها والعمل بها من بعض العلماء، وعليه فإنّ البحث يَشغَلُ شطرَ علوم الحديث (الردّ) وجزءاً مهماً من أصول الفقه وهو ما لا يُحتَجٌّ به من السنّة.
و"رّدُّ المتن"، كان - ولا يزال - يُثير الكثير من الإشكالات في وجه الباحثين، فقد خَفِيَ على الكثيرين دَرْكُ أسس نقده، وأدّى غموضُه الناشئُ عن عدم إفراده بالبحث المستقلّ إلى تَوَهُم أنّه لا محلٌّ للمتن من منهج النقد الحديثيّ.
إن البحث يعالج جملة إشكالات كلّية من قبيل: ما طبيعة الخلاف بين المحدّث والأصولي في نقد المتون؟ وهل يختلف منهج المحدّث في قبول الأخبار عن منهج الأصوليّ؟ وما أوجه الإختلاف بينهما في الحديث المردود وصفات الردّ؟ وما مقاييس كلٍّ منهما في رَدّ المتون؟.
وبَحْثُ هذه التساؤلات الكليّة من شانه أن يُحرّر طبيعة النظرين: الحديثي والأصوليّ في مجال نقد الحديث النبوي، كما يوضح موقع المتن من صنعة المحدّث النقدية، بل إنّ البحث يَصِل إلى توضيح مدارك العلوم الدينية عند كلٍّ منهما وكيفية حصول العلم وثبوت الحُجَّة ما يعني أنّ كثيراً من المسائل الفرعية والجزئيات تندرج ضمن تلك التساؤلات الكبرى.
