يحاول هذا العمل، رصد أوجه اشتغال عتبات المحكي القصير في التراث الإسلامي العربي من خلال نماذج ثلاثة: الأخبار والكرامات والطرف.
من هنا جاء الكتاب بمثابة مدونة حكائية تضطلع بوظائف كثيرة، وتنقل المتلقي إلى فضاءات معرفية وأدبية ودينية .. تصنف ضمن إطار الأدب غير الرسمي أو إذا شئنا (الأدب المتوازي) الذي جعل من الثقافة الإسلامية العربية دواوين لها من الثراء والعمق ما يوازي في أهميته الأدب الرسمي.
وبموازاة مع المتون النظرية والتأريخية والنقدية واللغوية التي اشتغل عليها المؤلف في هذا العمل نجده استثمر أيضا متوناً سردية تصنف إلى ثلاث زمر: متون خبرية تغطي امتداداً زمنياً يبتدىء بالقرن الثالث الهجري وينتهي بالقرن الحادي عشر الهجري، ويرصد أخبار فئات مخصوصة من قبيل الحمقى والأذكياء والبخلاء والعشاق والظرّاف ... ومتون كرامية تحفل بمظاهر الغرابة كلها وتبعث على الدهشة بسبب ما تسنده الأولياء من خرق سنن الحياة وإكراهات الطبيعة. ومتون طرفية تحتفي بالفكاهة، وتستثير الضحك وتعبث بالمواضعات الدينية والإجتماعية والسياسية والثقافية ...
وقد جاء الكتاب على شكل وحدات سردية قصيرة تتمحور حول شخص تميز – مثلا ببخله أو بولايته أو بذهوله. أيضا جاء الكتاب على شكل نصوص تشكل ثالوثا وأثافي ينضج عليها السرد على مهل مثل: الأخبار التي تجسد الفريد والكرامات التي تبهر وتمتع. وبهذا تتشكل برأي المؤلف حلقة سردية متكاملة تحيط بصرح من القيم الإجتماعية والدينية والنفسية، عملت على صياغة الوجدان الجماعي الإسلامي العربي عبر قرون وعصور وما تزال تفعل ذلك إلى اليوم بتجليات مختلفة ..
