هذا الكتاب هو عبارة عن دراسة في الأساطير والمعتقدات والتأملات البدائية التي ظهرت في مصر ووادي الرافدين، والتي نشأت عنها الأديان والفلسفات ف يالحضارات اللاحقة.
هذا الكتاب محاولة لفهم النظرة التي كان شعبنا مصر ووادي الرافدين ينظرانها إلى الدنيا التي تحيط بهما في الأزمنة القديمة. لقد كانا أمدن شعوب عصرهما. وخلفا لنا كتابات غنية متنوعة حلت رموز معظمها في السنوات المئة الأخيرة, غير أن قارئ اليوم حين تجابهه ترجمتها يشعر في أكثر الأحيان بأنه لا يستطيع أن يدرك معناها الأعمق.
وليس هناك ما هو أكثر ضلالاً من تأويل الأساطير تأويلاً جزئياً متقطعاً. مبنياً على افتراض ضمني بأن القدماء شغلتهم مشاكل كمشاكلنا، وأن أساطيرهم تمثل طريقة جميلة، وإن ينقصها النضج لحلها.
نود أن نقول مؤكدين إننا على وعي تام بالوظيفة الخلافة التي تقوم الأسطورة بها كطاقة حضارية حيى، وأنها تغذي بأقدار متفاوتة كل فكر ديني أو ميتافيزيقي.
