القافية تاج الإيقاع الشعري، وعموده وذورة سنامه، هي حلية الشعر وزينته، بل هي الرابط بين أبياته، وذلك في الشعر العمودي على وجه خاص، لذلك لم يعد خافيًا على أحد ما للقافية من أهمية كبرى في صناعة الشعر، كما أنها ركيزة أصلية في بيان الإيقاع الموسيقي الظاهرية في الشعر بعد علم العروض، لذلك اهتم القدماء والمحدثون على السواء بالقافية دراسة وبحثًا لما لها من أهمية قصوى من هذا اللون من الدراسة، هذا البحث المهم الذي ربط القافية بالدراسات اللغوية الحديثة، تلك الدراسة التي قام بها باحث نابه هو الأستاذ محمود فراج أحمد، حيث بذل جهدًا مشكورًا في تتبع أبعاد القافية عند القدماء، ثم دراستها عند المعاصرين، الذين كشف عن جهودهم وبحوثهم في هذا المجال، ثم دراسته الرائعة عن أبعاد القافية وفقًا للدرس الصوتي الحديث. لا أبالغ إن قلت إن هذه الدراسة غطت جانبًا مهمًا في الدراسات العروضية، وهي بطبيعتها دراسات نادرة إذا ما قيست بالفنون والعلوم في المجالات الأخرى.
