ما كتب عن المسرح اليوناني القديم كثير، وما كتب عن السياسة وجذورها الاجتماعية في اليونان القديمة كثير أيضاً. إلا أن ما كتب عن هذا المسرح منظوراً إليه من تلك السياسة وجذورها قليل أن لم يكن نادراً. والكتاب الذي بين يدي القارئ العربي نمط من هذا الجمع والربط الفريدين بين استيعاب النصوص المسرحية وفهم أصولها السياسية-الاجتماعية. فمؤلفه، الأستاذ جورج تومسن، كان أستاذ اليونانية في عدد من الجامعات البريطانية وعضو شرف في اتحاد الكتاب اليونانيين.
وقد كتب عدداً من الكتب عن اليونانية وآدابها. ومن هذه: (أوزان الشعر الغنائي اليوناني)، (اللغة اليونانية). كما ترجم عنها عدداً آخر أهمها (أوريستيه) اسخيلوس. وإلى ذلك، كان المؤلف أحد كبار المثقفين الذين اسهموا في العمل السياسي المنظم من أجل الحرية والاشتراكية منذ الثلاثينات. وبالرغم من أن الكتاب كما يشير إلى ذلك القسم الأول من عنوانه، يعالج أعمال اسخيلوس وعصره بصورة خاصة، إلا أنه يتناول أيضاً الأسس الاجتماعية التي قامت عليها الدراما اليونانية بصورة عامة. وقد اختار المؤلف اسخيلوس مداراً لكتابه لأنه رأى فيه نموذج كاتب ومفكر ثوري أسهم في تغيير مجريات عصره. إلا أن أثر اسخيلوس يتجاوز عصره ليبلغ عصرنا ويجد مكانه فيه، رغم ما استجد بعده من روائع في الفكر الإنساني.
إن أهمية ترجمة هذا الكتاب تكمن ليس في مجرد إغناء المكتبة العربية بمثل هذه الدراسة الأصلية للفكر السياسي اليوناني القديم عبر مسرح اليونان القديمة، بل في إمكان اتخاذها دليلاً يستضاء به في أية دراسة لمادة مماثلة. وقد حظي الكتاب بمكانة مرموقة بين المعنيين بالفكر والمسرح اليونانيين داخل موطن المؤلف وخارجه، إذ نشر أولا في عام 1941، وأعيد نشره في عام 1945 ثم في عام 1966. وتجري الآن إعادة طبعة للمرة الرابعة. والترجمة الحالية هي عن طبعة العام الأخير.
