"ب.ترافن" روائي وقاص يحب أن يكتب عن كل شيء، من توافه الحياة اليومية إلى الحقائق الأبوية، إنه يصف العجول التي ترد العطف الإنساني أو تقدره، وكلب يثمن الصداقة وهندي يحول أحلامه الخاص عن طريق مواد سلالة، وهنود يعرفون بالضبط لماذا يريدون أن يهتدوا إلى الصليب. ومن قصته الطويلة (مكاريد) يقدم التواءً من العالم الجديد إلى الفكرة الفاوستية القديمة، فمكاريو الجائع، والذي لا يكسب إلا القليل جداً من قطعة الأشجار والأخشاب شخص عالمي يجابه الرجل العجوز: (الموت).
إن الفيلم المكسيكي الذي اقتبس من هذه القصة حصل على عشر جوائز عالمية والقصة تعتبر واحدة من أحس الحكايات الشعبية في العالم الجديد في أدبنا. أما قصة "الطيف" فلا تخرج أيضاً من هذا الإطار وهي من أجمل ما كتب من قصص وفيها يروي قصة رجل اشترى منزلاً في إحدى المزارع النائية بالقرب من قرية بعض الهنود الحمر وهناك سيحدث له أشياء غريبة وسيرى أحلاماً وأناساً عادوا من الموت ليتحدثوا معه وليلقوا عظات قد يكون بأشد الحاجة إليها.
ولد ب. ترافن في شيكاغو عام 1890 وتوفي عام 1969. يتقن عدة لغات ولهجات فقد كتب بالإنكليز والإسبانية. عمل في مطلع حياته ماسح أحذية وخادماً في سفينة. اختار هنود المكسيك المضطهدين موضوعاً أساسياً لأعماله الأدبية. تكتنف حياته الأسرار وخصوصاً الفترة الأولى ما بين 1913 و1925 فقد أشيع عنه أنه كان من رجال الثورة السرية في ألمانيا من 1913-1925 وأنه امتهن السياسة في جمهورية بافاريا ما بين 1918 و1919 وأنه كان عنصراً فعالاً في عمال العالم الصناعيين في الولايات المتحدة والمكسيك وأنه طرد من الولايات المتحدة فيما بين 1918 و1919.
إلا أن مهنة ترافن الأدبية ليست أسطورة، فقد بدأت عام 1925 حين نشر بعض قصصه بالألمانية إلى أن ذاع صيته وأصبح من أشهر كتاب القصة في المكسيك.
