لا ننتبه إلى أنهن يشعرون مثلنا، يحببن، يعشقن، يرغبن في التعلم والعمل والزواج والإنجاب ويحلمن ببيت سعيد... يبكين، يحزن، يضحكن، يفرحن، يغضبن... مخلصات، وفيات، شريفات، مكافحات، وأيضاً ناكرات، جاحدات، وربما سارقات ومجرمات، وفاسدات. مثلنا تماماً، بينهن الصالحات والطالحات، كما بيننا نحن. إذن هن لسن آلات أو مخلوقات أدنى، ومع ذلك، وربما بحكم العادة، وربما بدوافع عنصرية وربما لغير ذلك، اعتدنا النظر إليهن من فوق رغم أننا أسندنا إليهن الكثير مما يفترض أن نقوم به.
ظروفهن في بلادهن أجبرتهن على الهجرة للعمل هنا لدينا، وتوسع انتشارهن ودورهن في حيواتنا وبات لهن امتداداتهن، وتجمعاتهن...
تحفل الصحف بأخبارهن في صفحات الحوادث... هذه ألقت بنفسها من النافدة، وتلك سرقت منزل مخدوميها وهربت، وهذه سجنت، وتلك حبلت من ابن مخدوميها وأجهضت وو...أخبار نقرأها بصورة شبه يومية، وقلما يتوقف أحد عند البحث عن الدوافع والظروف التي أوصلت إلى ما أوصلت إليه، ونادراً ما أنصفت أحداهن، بل ربما لم يحصل ذلك على الإطلاق، فـ"الخادمة" دوماً هي المذنبة وهي المخطئة بل أحياناً هي الخطيئة بعينها!
ليس في هذه الرواية التي يتناول فيها الكاتب عدة حالات لعدة فتيات ونساء منهن، محاكمة لأحد منا أو إدانة، ولا لإدانتهن أو تبرئتهن، إنها باختصار محاولة، لتظهير صورة مشتركة لنا معهن، ومعهن لنا عبر تسليط الضوء على حيواتهن، والغوص في مشاعرهن.. في ما يحببن وما يكرهن.. في انفعالاتهن وأحاسيسهن وبعض الإحاطة في ظروفهن، وفي كيفية معاملتنا لهن، دون أن يعمي ذلك أن هذه الحالات هي إحاطة شاملة بكل جوانب الموضوع، ومن دون ادعاء أنها دراسة اجتماعية أو نفسية.
