يستعرض هذا الكتاب أهم المبادئ والعقائد الأساسية المكونة للحداثة الغربية وانعكاسها على الثقافة العربية. يرى المؤلف أن الموقف من الفكر الغربي الحديث من أهم الأسئلة المطروحة، لشعورنا بحضوره في فكرنا كأحد أهم الموضوعات التي تفرض نفسها بشكل مباشر أو غير مباشر. وعلى الرغم مما يقال في هذا الموضوع، فإنه لم يستنفد ضرورات البحث النظري فيه حتى اليوم، لأننا لو ألقينا نظرة على الساحة الثقافية العربية وما أنتجته على مدار قرنين حتى يومنا هذا لوجدناها مشبعة بروح الغرب وثقافته إلى درجة كبيرة.
ويثير المؤلف تساؤلاته التي يقف عندها: ما الفكر الغربي الحديث؟ وما مرتكزاته؟ وما المعتقدات التي قامت عليها الحضارة الغربية الحديثة، التي أعطتها هذه الخصوصية والتميز؟ وتبعاً لذلك ما موقفنا نحن المسلمين من هذا الفكر؟ وهل يمكن للنزعة الوسطية التوفيقية والانتقائية أن تكون هي السائدة؟ وما الأشكال التي تبدت فيها الحداثة الغربية في حياتنا، وما انعكاسات ذلك على ثقافتنا وفكرنا العربي والإسلامي؟ وما طبيعة العلاقة التي تفرضها الحضارة الحديثة مع الآخر؟ أهي علاقة حوار ومثاقفة، أم إلغاء وتقييد؟
تحاول الدراسة الإجابة عن كل هذه التساؤلات من خلال استعراض أهم المبادئ والعقائد الأساسية لفكر الحداثة الغربي، وهي: الإنسانوية والعقلانية، والطبيعية، والتأليه الطبيعي، والتقدمية، والوصفية، والمادية.
وقد اختار المؤلف هذه المبادئ والعقائد استناداً إلى رؤية تاريخية لتطور الفكر الغربي الحديث. لكنه لم يدرسها من حيث تكونها المفهومي والتاريخي وتطورها مع الفلاسفة، كما لم يدرسها كتيارات ومذاهب فلسفية مستقل بعضها عن بعض، بل تناولها على أنها منظومة متميزة.. وقد حللها وأظهر أوجه التكامل البنيوي فيما بينها، الأمر الذي يبيح رؤية الروابط الداخلية لها، على الرغم من التشعب المذهبي الكبير التنوع والتناقض الذي يوحي باستقلال كل منها.
