بين زبيدة وظلها الأكثر ألفة من طبيعتها العدوانية، وبين شاب ملحد ألهته علاقاته الغرامية عن دراسة الطب البيطري في أوروبا الشرقية، وبينه وبين الحياة التي بات على غير وفاق مع عناصرها المتناقضة، تدور الرواية / الحكاية التي يسوقها "جمال الخياط" بخطاب أحادي وفي فضاء فوق واقعي، وزمن غير زمننا، وشخصيات لا تعدو أن تكون منفعلة لا فاعلة، مسلوبة الإرادة، تعيش في وحشة وفي عزلة، إلا من ظلها الذي يرافقها ويؤنس وحشتها "زبيدة والظل لا يختلفان، كلاهما قطعتان تتحدان في روح واحدة تمتهنان الألفة لحظة إفتراقهما المؤقت حتى يلتئم شملهما من جديد حتى تطلبت الظروف إتحادهما".
بهذا الفضاء الروائي يتوغل الروائي في دهاليز النفس البشرية يبحث عن السبب الذي يجعل من الكائن الحي سلبياً متفرجاً على الآخرين يعيش في صمت مؤلم كما هي زبيدة في هذا العمل الروائي المختلف في طرحه وتناوله لمن يعيشون في الظل ولكنه "ظل أليف" كما يشير إلى ذلك العنوان.
