هذا الكتاب لقد غدت ثقافة القدس عندنا مثل كبسولة متكلّسة لكنّها مقدّسة، جلّ عملنا لا يتجاوز أبوابها وأثوابها، نتعزّل بها هكذا منذ حوالي ألف عام ولا يتمعّن في حقيقتها أحد.
فهذا الكتاب يسعى لتنقية ذلك المركّب الثقافيّ وتفكيكه إلى عناصر متباينة مفصّلة يفترض أنّها مداخل فهمنا لجوهر ثقافة القدس؛ ومن ثم يتبيّن الكتاب كنه كلّ عنصر بتشريحه إلى مفاهيمه الأساسيّة الّتي تردّ إلى مصادرها حتّى يتميّز أصيلها من سقيمها من دخيلها، وقد نوقشت تلك المفاهيم من خلال مباحث في "إشارات الإسراء" و"بني إسرائيل" و"المسجد الأقصى"، و"المضمون التاريخيّ لنبوءة آيات الإسراء".
وإنّ تنقية تلك العناصر ستؤدّي إلى إدراك فحوى ثقافتنا الأصليّة حول القدس، بحيث يعيد تلك الثقافة غضّة كما استوعبها أوائلنا، لعلّنا نكون فعّالين كما كانوا، وإنّ من غاية الكتاب أن تتبلور لدينا أرضيّة ثقافيّة مشتركة حول القدس، لذلك نوقشت مباحثه من زوايا خاصّة ترتبط بالمحتوى القرآنيّ، بإعتبار القرآن الكريم عاملاً مشتركاً يحدّ من عوامل الخلاف، مع مراجعة مصادر أهل الكتاب وأعمال الباحثين لإثراء النقاش وتعميق طروحاته.
نرى أن هذا الكتاب لا بدّ أن يقرأ، فالمسائل، الّتي يطرحها، تستثير لدى القارئ، بعداً غائباً لمدينة إيليا، وتطلق لديه أفكاراً فعّالة، سيّان في ذلك من أيّد أفكار الكتاب ومن تحدّاها.
