تشكل هذه الرحلة والتي حازت على جائزة ابن بطوطة للأدب الجغرافي لعام 2004 والتي هي من إعداد العلامة ماء العينين بن العتيق (1887-1957)، مثالاً مهماً لرحلات الحج التي قام بها المغاربة إلى الديار المقدسة عبر الأجيال. ومما يزيد في أهميتها دقة المرحلة التاريخية التي تحتفي بتسجيل أهم ملامحها، ليس في المغرب وأقاليمه فقط، بل في ليبيا ومصر والديار الحجازية، وبخاصة لأن تلك المرحلة كانت مرحلة صراع مع قوى الاستعمار.
هاجس التوثيق الدقيق، الذي امتاز الرحالة (ابن العتيق)، يزيد من قيمة النص الثقافية والتاريخية، وعلى وجه الخصوص في ما يتعلق بالشخصيات والأعلام الذين رافقهم أو قابلهم في طريق الرحلة من تطوان إلى أمّ القرى. يضاف إلى ذلك أنها ترصد جزءاً غنياً من تراث الصحراء المغربية.
انطلقت هذه الرحلة من وادي الذهب في الجنوب عابرةً تلك البيئة الصحراوية إلى الشمال ليلتئم شملُ الوفد الصحراوي مع غيره من الوفود الوطنية في تطوان، وانطلقوا إلى وجهتهم بعضهم براً، وبعضهم بحراً، وبعضهم جواً. وهي رحلة تزخر بتراجم الأعلام، وخصوصاً أعلام آل ماء العينين، والقصائد الشعرية الكثيرة، فضلاً عن المعلومات الشرعية والأدبية والتاريخية المتنوعة.
