منذ وقت قريب أصبح الحديث عن وليام فوكنر كروائي عظيم أمراً مقبولاً، ومازال كثيرون يعتقدون أن فوكنر لا يكاد يكون روائياً. ومنذ البداية كان النقد منقسماً حول فوكنر ما بين الذين يرفعونه إلى أعلى مرتبة وبين من لا يكادون يعتبرونه فناناً على الإطلاق. أما النظرة المعتدلة التي ترى في أعماله عظمة تتجاوز كل الأخطاء والقصورات فقل أن يصغي إليها أو يعبر عنها أحد. إن صعوبة أعمال فوكنر المتميزة هي سبب واضح لهذا الاختلاف النقدي. والسبب الآخر هو ما يميز موضوعاته من عنف ورعب وخاصة في رواية ":الحرم" التي شكلت تحدياً قاسياً لذوق ومس نقاده القدامى.
وفي هذا الكتاب دراسة تناولت أعمال فوكنر كل واحد على حدة باعتبار أن لكل عمل روائي أعده كيان مستقل وقائم بذاته، كما وفي الكتاب تحليل لآرائه وتوقف عند الطابع المحلي للموضوعات التي تناولها.
