حين فشل عرفة الساحر في الهرب من الحارة هو وزوجته عواطف، تم إقتيادهما إلى بيت الناظر الطاغية قدري، حيث وضع كل منهما داخل جوال، ثم حملهما القتلة غلاظ القلوب إلى الخلاء، وألقوا بهما في حفرة عميقة، قاموا بحفرها خصيصاً، ثم أهالوا التراب، وعادوا قبل الفجر بعد أن نفذوا المهمة الدنيئة، لكن الناس ظلوا يتمسكون بالأمل، وكلهم عذبهم الطغيان قالوا لا بد للظلم من آخر ولليل من نهار، ولنرين في حارتنا مصرع الطغيان ومشرق النور والعجائب؛ هكذا اختتم عملاق الرواية العربية "نجيب محفوظ" رائعته الفريدة أولاد حارتنا.
لكن الشاعر "حسن توفيق" تأكد أن مهمة القتلة لم تنجح، بعد أن ألتقى مع عرفة وزوجته وهما يهيمان على وجهيهما قرب صحراء جبل المقطم، وقد عرف من عرفة أنه تمكن من الخروج من حفرة الموت بفضل حبه العميق للحياة، وبعد خروجه مباشرة شرع في إنقاذ زوجته من المصير القاسي.
ومن خلال لقاءاته العديدة مع الرجل الذي يطلق عليه أولاد حارتنا اسم المجنون، لمجرد أنه يحب النظام في زمن الفوضى ويعشق المعرفة رغم كل أشكال البلادة من حوله، يعرف عرفة ما لم يكن يعرف عن الحواري القريبة والبعيدة، وكيف أنها تتقدم على حارة الجبلاوي في كل مجالات الحياة، وتتوالى أحداث الرواية، ويظل الجميع يعيشون ما بين إنتظار بعضهم لبشائر الفرج أو توقع غيرهم أن يندفع الطوفان جارفاً في طريقه الحياة والأحياء، إلى أن تواجهنا - في الخاتمة - صرحة متألمة: رعب أكبر من هذا سوف يجيء - لن ينجيكم أن تعتصموا منه بأعالي جبل الصمت.
