يسدّ هذا الكتاب فراغاً كبيراً في المكتبة العربيّة، فقد أكبّ صاحبه نيّفاً وعشر سنين على المصادر والمراجع والمخطوطات يفتّش فيها، بصبر وجلد، عن معالم الوطنيّة في الشعر اللبناني، بنوعٍ خاصٍ، والشعر العربي، عموماً، من مطلع النهضة إلى عام 1939، ملتزماً في بحثه الموضوعيّة، والبعد عن الهوى، والأمانة، والدقّة في النقل والإقتباس، ومستهدفاً الحقيقة المجرّدة.
ولم يتأثّر المؤلِّف بالتقلّب السياسي، وبالأحداث اللبنانيّة الدامية، وما رافقها من تعصّب وإنحياز، فأحاط بموضوعه المتشعِّب الواسع إحاطةً موفَّقةً وافية، وعاد إلى منابع الوطنيّة التي صبّت في المشرق العربي، فدرس تفاعل الأدب والوطنيّة في الغرب.
ولما كان البحث شديد الإرتباط بالتاريخ والمجتمع، جهد المؤلِّف لمعالجته على ضوء مصطلح التاريخ المحقَّق وعلم الإجتماع، مستنداً إلى المراجع العربيّة والأجنبيّة، وأضاف إلى فهارس الكتاب معجماً ضافياً للشعراء اللبنانيين يضم مائة وسبعة وستين شاعراً، وأخرج الكتاب بمنهج حديث، وأسلوب مشوِّق في العرض والتحليل.
وقد كان رائده، فيّما بحث وقمّش، تأدية واجب وطني إلى جانب واجبه العلميّ المجرَّد.
