هذا الكتاب «الإسلام والسياسة في العصر الوسيط» للدكتور مكرم عبَّاس، هو محاولة علمية موفّقة لنقد الكثير من التصوّرات الشائعة حول الفكر السياسي الإسلامي، وذلك بالتركيز على بيان تنوّع الفكر السياسي الإسلامي، كما تجلّى في تراثنا الثقافي، وكما تفاعل مع تطوّرات المجتمع خلال التاريخ. ويتميّز الكتاب بملمح أكاديمي جليّ، وبموقف منهجي يتجاوز الاختصارات السهلة، ليتعمّق في دراسة دقائق الفكر السياسي الإسلامي في العصر الوسيط. ذلك الفكر الذي أنتج – حسب رأي المؤلف – «ثلاث طرق لفهم السياسة»: تتجلّى الطريقة الأولى في كتابات مؤلّفي «الآداب السلطانية» التي تركّز على قيم الحكم، واحتياجها للحكمة والاعتبار بالتجارب السياسية سواء تلك التي جرت داخل سياق التاريخ الإسلامي، أم تلك المستمدّة من خارجه (الفرس، الروم، الهند)... أما الطريقة الثانية، فهي طريقة الفقهاء، الذين يعيب عليهم المؤلّف أنهم انشغلوا بإشكالية الفتنة، وبالغوا في التركيز على أولويّة الأمن. وثالث تلك الطرق طريقة الفلاسفة (الفارابي، ابن سينا...) ، وهي طريقة تفكّر في المسألة السياسية من منظور القانون الطبيعي وبمقصد تحقيق كمال الإنسان، مستلهمة الثقافة العلمية والفلسفية المتداولة في زمنهم. وقد انتهى المؤلّف بعد تحليله لنماذج من هذه الطرق المنهجية الثلاث إلى خلاصات مهمة.
