رُغم دهاء الأمير فخر الدين السياسي، الذي يجعله يستحق عن جدارة لقب تلميذ ميكافيلِّي، إلاَّ أنَّهُ تعامل مع الغرب دون تبصُّر بما قد يأتي به هذا التعامل من مخاطر، فهو إن نظر إلى الدولة العُثمانيَّة بصفتها مُحتلٌّ يُلقي بِثقله على صدره، فإنَّهُ لم يعتبر أنَّ أي دولة غربيَّة ستكون مُحتلَّة أيضاً وتُلقي بإحتلالها على أراضي إمارته وشعبه، نظراً للإمتداد الجُغرافي الطبعي لِبلاد الشَّام، وبِسبب الأهميَّة الإقتصاديَّة والإستراتيجيَّة لِلكثير من المواقع والبلاد الواقعة ضمن المُقاطعات والإمارات اللُبنانيَّة، لأيِّ كيانٍ سياسيٍّ من شأنه أن يقوم في فلسطين وإنَّ العائق الكبير الذي كان يمنع الدُول الغربيَّة، ويحول دون إقدامها على إرسال حملةٍ صليبيَّةٍ جديدةٍ إلى الأراضي المُقدَّسة، كان الخوف من ردَّة الفعل العُثمانيَّة.
فعلى الرُغم من ضعف الدولة آنذاك وإنغماسها في القلاقل الداخليَّة، فإنَّ سياستها تجاه الغرب كانت من الثوابت التي لا تتزعزع.
