عُرف البروفيسور راي جاكندوف بإشتغاله بعلوم الدلالة منذ تخرجه في جامعة إم آي تي التي حصل منها على درجة الدكتوراة بإشراف البروفيسور نعوم تشومسكي سنة 1969م، وقد ألف في علوم الدلالة خاصة عدداً من الكتب الذائعة وكتب عدداً كبيراً من الأبحاث عن قضايا دلالية عديدة.
ولا يتسع المجال، هنا، لرصد مسيرة البروفيسور جاكندوف البحثية الطويلة المتشعبة؛ ويكفي أن أعرض بعض ما يتضمنه الكتاب المترجم هنا؛ بل إن المجال لا يتسع لعرض ما يتضمنه هذا الكتاب بالتفصيل أيضاً، وذلك لتعدد القضايا التي يتناولها وتشابكها مما يجعل أي عرض لها يطول بأكثر مما يمكن لمقدمة أن تتسع له.
وهذا الكتاب، كما يشير المؤلف في مقدمته القصيرة، عرض مختصر شامل لكثير من القضايا التي أمضى في تناولها أكثر من ثلاثين عاماً من نشاطه العلمي، ويقوم الكتاب على التوجه النظري المعروف بــ "اللسانيات الإدراكية" الذي يُعد جاكندوف أحد رواده وأعلامه، وتُعنى "اللسانيات الإدراكية"، عند جاكندوف، بإقامة جسر بين "اللسانيات التوليدية" التي خط مسارها عالم اللسانيات الأشهر نعوم تشومسكي، وهي التي لا تكاد تهتم بإستخدام اللغة، وتوجهات أخرى ترى أن دراسة اللغة هي دراسة إستعمالها فقط.
وسوف يلاحظ قارئ هذه الترجمة أنه على الرغم من تشعب القضايا التي تناولها المؤلف فقد عرضها بأسلوب غير متخصص يجعل قراءة الكتاب ميسورة حتى لغير المتخصص، وقد أشار إلى أنه قصد هذا التيسير قصداً، وهو ما يشهد به عنوان الكتاب الذي صيغ ليلفت النظر إلى أن هدفه أن يكون دليلاً سهل التناول للإطلال على القضايا العميقة التي يتناولها الكتاب.
والنقطة المركزية في الكتاب هي إقتراح المؤلف ما يسميه "فرضية المعنى غير الشعوري" التي يقول عنها إنها "ليست فرضية عن اللغة والفكر وحسب، بل هي جزء من وجهة نظر أكثر شمولاً للكيفية التي نَفهم بها العالم والكيفية التي نعايشه بها، وليست العلاقة بين اللغة والفكر إلا حالة خاصة من الكيفية التي يعمل بها الذهن بصورة عامة" (نهاية الفصل الخامس والعشرين).
