جان بول سارتر هو واحد من الفلاسفة القلائل الذين نالوا شهرة كبيرة في منتصف القرن العشرين، وهو من مؤسسي المذهب الوجودي الفرنسي، كانت دعوته للحرية والفردية انعكاساً لظروف مجتمعه الأوروبي فيما بين الحربين الساعيتين، وخصوصاً هزيمة فرنسا ووقوعها تجنب الاحتلال النازي، حيث انخرط وزملاؤه الفلاسفة، في سلك المقاومة الشعبية، وقد دفعته هذه الظروف إلى بحث مشكلة الحرية أيضاً إلى جانب غيرها من المسائل التي بحثها على ضوء فلسفة كانت لها سماتها المختلفة، متناول الكتاب بالدراسة فلسفة سارتر الذي أطلق عليه لقب فيلسوف الحرية.
تطرق الكاتب أولاً إلى بيان معنى الفلسفة عند مدارس الفكر الفلسفي المعاصر ليتحدث بعد ذلك عن جان بول سارتر كفيلسوف معاصر ومن مذاهب الحرية في العصر الحاضر وليبين بعد ذلك عوامل وظروف نشأة وجودية سارتر ثم خلاصة رأيه (سارتر) في الحرية. وحدد الكاتب بعدها خصائص الحرية في الفلسفة الوجودية لينتقل بعدها للحديث عن عدة مواضيع: أزمة الحرية ونقدها في فلسفة سارتر، ما هي الوجودية وسارتر والمنهج الظاهري، ظاهرية منهج سارتر، علم الوجود الظاهري، إعادة الإنسان داخل الماركسية، من إنسان الضياع إلى إنسان التاريخ، المادية الجدلية ليست استقراءً علمياً، للوصاية الماركسية، مواجهة ثنائية الوجود والحقيقة العقلية، أفكار سارتر لديالكتيك الطبيعة، تفنيد سارتر لرأي انجل، المادية الجدلية مباطنة للتاريخ، نماذج لفهم سارتر الديالكتيلي للجماعة، الماركسية قالب ماركسي بمضمون سارتري، واختتم ذلك بخواطر مطروحة للمناقشة، هذا وقد تضمنت تلك الدراسة ترجمة نص من كتاب سارتر، "نقد العقل الجدلي" سارتر والمادية الجدلية من "الوجود والعدم" إلى نقد العقل الجدلي.
