يضمّ هذا الكتاب شرح لفصوص الحكم لابن عربي وهو في الفلسفة الإلهية الممتزجة بالنصوص، لا في التصوف البحت. قسّم ابن عربي كتابه إلى سبع وعشرين فصاً وكل فصّ منها يستند إلى طائفة من الآيات القرآنية والأحاديث النبوية الشريفة والتي بدورها تُنْسب حكمة الفصِّ إليها.
ويسرد المؤلف قصة كل نبي كما وردت في القرآن الكريم وكما يعرفها جمهور المسلمين عادة ولكنه يتخذ من كل قصة مسرحاً ليُمثل فيه صاحب القصة الدور الخاص الذي يُعهد إليه القيام به، بأن الأنبياء على نحو ما صورهم في الفصوص نماذج وصور للإنسان الكامل الذي يعرف الله حقّ معرفته، فكلّ منهم ينطق أو يُنطقه ابن عربي بالمعرفة التي اختصّ بها، ليقوم من ثمّ بشرح ناحية من نواحي مذهبه والدفاع عنه.
وغاية المؤلف من ذلك البحث في طبيعة الوجود بوجه عام وصلة الوجود الممكن (العالم) بالوجود الواجب (الله). وأخصّ ناحية فيه، كما تشهد بذلك عناوين فصوله، والتي تتمحور حول البحث في الحقيقة الإلهية متجلية في أكمل مظاهرها في صور الأنبياء عليهم السلام. ففي كل نبي تتمثل صفةً من صفات الحق كصفة الألوهية في الفصل الإدريسي والحقية في الفص الإسحاقي، العليّة في الفصّ الإسماعيلي، والفردية في الفص المحمدي.
وعلى ضوء هذه التفاصيل يمكن القول بأن ابن عربي لا يعرض في هذا الكتاب لمسائل التصوف العملية أو النظرية، كما أنه أيضاً لا يعرض لمسائل علم الفقه في محاولة لتفسيرها صوفياً على نحو ما فعل في الفتوحات المكية وغيره من الكتب، ولكنه يلخص مذهباً في الفلسفة الصوفية أدقّ وأنضج ما فاض عن عقله وعاطفته الدينية معاً يُقرّ فيه قضية عامة في طبيعة الوجود ثم يفرع عنها كل ما يمكن تفريعهُ من المسائل المتصلة بالله والعالم والإنسان، وهذه هي ماهية الفلسفة والذي أكسب هذه الفصوص تلك النفحة الروحانية، تأييد ابن عربي هذه الفلسفة بالذوق الصوفي وبتجربته الشخصية في المعارج الروحانية وهذه هي ناحيته الصوفية. وابن عربي هو حكيم صوفي متكلم ففيه مفسر أديب، وشاعر مشارك في علوم أخرى وهو فوق كل ذلك فيلسوف صوفي وهبه الله بسطه في الفكر والخيال وعمقاً في الحسّ الروحي.
