تتنوع الأشكال والأجناس الأدبية لدى توماس برنهارد (1931/2/9-1989/2/12)، لكن أغلب أعماله تدور في فلك واحد: المرض والجنون والموت. بدأ برنهارد حياته الأدبية شاعراً، ثم اتجه إلى النثر، وفي مطلع الثمانينيات لمع اسمه في دنيا المسرح في البلاد الناطقة بالألمانية. وعندما توفي في الثامنة والخمسين من عمره، كان قد أمسى من أنجح "المهمشين" على ساحة الأدب الألماني المعاصر.
في "صداقة" يتحدث توماس برنهارد عن علاقته بباول فيتغنشتاين، ابن شقيق الفيلسوف المشهور لودفيغ فيتغنشتاني. وكانت أواصر الصداقة قد جمعت بينهما عام 1967، عندما كان الكاتب يُعالَج في مصحة لأمراض الرئة، بينما كان باول نزيلاً على بعد خطوات منه في مستشفى الأمراض العقلية. كان باول في مطلع حياته من الأثرياء، فهو سليل عائلة من أغنى عائلات النمسا، غير أنه بعثر نقوده بلا حساب على أصدقائه وعلى الفقراء، حتى انتهى به الحال معدماً وحيداً، لا تربطه صداقة بإنسان سوى بالمؤلف.
في هذا الكتاب-الذي يعتبره أشهر نقاد ألمانيا مارسيل رايش رانيتسكي من أكثر ما كتب برنهارد عذوبة ودفئاً إنسانياً-يصف الأديب، في نَفَسٍ سردي لا ينقطع، السنوات الأخيرة من عمر صديقة، التي تعكس أيضاً جزءاً من السيرة الذاتية لتوماس برنهارد، وتأملاته حول الحياة والموت، والأدب والفن، والعقل والجنون.
