"القرآن في محيطه التاريخي" عمل إستثنائي ذو مصادر علميّة أساسيّة عن القرآن نفسه، فأغلب الدراسات تُعالج القرآن من خلال عدسة إرتجاعيّة متمثّلة في التفاسير الإسلاميّة المُتأخّرة، أما هذا العمل فيُقدِّم منظوراً محيطيّاً.
والقارئ يواجه في هذا الكتاب تحدياً مزدوجاً، أولاً أن يتأمَّل في الجدالات العظيمة حول معنى القرآن، وثانياً أن يتأمّل في البحث الجديد الّذي يزعُم أنَّه يُقدِّم حلّاً حاسماً لتلك الجدالات.
في القسم الأوَّل، يتأمّل الكتاب ويدفعون إلى الأمام بنظريّات من أجل فهم جديد لتفسير القرآن، فتطرح على بساط البحث مسألة القراءة السريانيّة - الآراميّة لكريستوف لوكسينبرغ، وكذلك أهميّة النقوش الكتابيّة العربيّة المكتشفة حديثاً.
في القسم الثاني، يضع الكتّاب القرآن في البيئة الدينيّة للعصور القديمة المتأخِّرة، مُبَيِّنين محادثته مع الأدب اليهودي والمسيحي، في القسم الثالث، يتأمَّل الكتّاب التراث الإسلامي المتعلِّق بتفسير القرآن، ويسألون عن كيفيّة العلاقة بين البحث العلمي والتراث الديني.
