الأسرة لها دورها الفاعل فى عملية بناء شخصية الطفل، وليعلم كل أب وكل أم أن الأبوة واجب ومسئولية كبرى، وعلى كل أب وكل أم أن يؤدى هذا الواجب كما ينبغى، يقول "جان جاك روسو" من لا يستطيع القيام بواجب الأبوة لا يحق له أن يتزوج ليصبح أباً، لأن الأبن نتاج ما يزرعه أبوه، فإذا استطاع الأب والأم أن يغرسا فى أولادهما الصفات والسجايا والخصال الإيجابية، فسوف يكون الولد ولداً نافعاً إيجابياً، أما إذا لم يتحمل الوالدان هذه المسئولية - مسئولية الأبوة - فإن الأبن سوف يشب عضواً لا قيمة له فى المجتمع، ويصبح عالة على غيره طوال حياته، ويقول "سليمان الحكيم" الأبن ينشأ على ما كان والده، إن العروق عليها ينبت الشجر. ويقول "أوغوسطينوس" ليست الصعوبة فى إنجاب الأولاد، بل الصعوبة كل الصعوبة فى إعالتهم.
وهذا القول قد لمس مكمن القضية ولب الموضوع لأن إعالة الأولاد ليست بالأمر الهين السهل، بلى هى شاقة وصعبة، ولكن الأب يتذوق حلاوتها إذا شاهد ثمار ما غرست يداه ثماراً ناضجة حلوة تأسر العين والعقل إذا شاهد أولاده وهم حقاً رجال الغد.
