ينحى هذا الكتاب منحاً خاصاً بين أقرانه إذ يركز جل عنايته على دراسة الأشكال الثانوية، وال عوامل العديدة التي ساهمت في تكوين قشرة الأرض وتشكيلها. وقدم لهذه الدراسة، بوصف سريع لقشرة الأرض ثم بعرض عام لتركيبها الصخري، وكان الهدف من هذه المقدمة توضيح الأقاليم الصخرية الرئيسية التي ينقسم إليها سطح الكرة الأرضية وخصوصاً وأن الجغرافي يجب أن يهدف دائماً من وراء دراسته الجيومورفولوجية، إلى أن يبين في النهاية كيف أن سطح الأرض ينقسم إلى أنماط وأنواع من حيث تكوينه الصخري، ومن حيث صورة التضاريسية، ومن حيث العوامل المختلفة التي تؤدي إلى تباين تشكيلها، وبهذا تختلف الدراسة الجغرافية عن الدراسة الجيولوجية.
ثم انتقل بعد ذلك إلى دراسة تحليلية للعمليات الجيومورفية حرص فيها على تبيان إلى أي حد ترتبط هذه العمليات بعناصر البيئة الطبيعية مجتمعة، وقد عني في الفصول التالية بتحليل العوامل الجيومورفية المختلفة، والدور الذي يقوم به كل عامل في تشكيل سطح الأرض، والأشكال والصور التي تبدو بها قشرة الأرض إذا ما تأثرت بأي عامل من هذه العوامل. ويتخلل هذا التحليل عرض لبعض النظريات التي كثر النقاش والجدل حولها، وخصوصاً ما يصل منها بدورات التعرية في الأقاليم المختلفة.
