ولد الدكتور صلاح فضل (محمد صلاح الدين) بقرية شباس الشهداء بوسط الدلتا في 21 مارس عام 1938م، اجتاز المراحل التعليمية الأولى الابتدائية والثانوية بالمعاهد الأزهرية. حصل على ليسانس كلية دار العلوم –جامعة القاهرة عام 1962م. عمل معيدًا بالكلية ذاتها منذ تخرجه حتى عام 1965م.
أوفد في بعثة للدراسات العليا بإسبانيا وحصل على دكتوراه الدولة في الآداب من جامعة مدريد المركزية عام 1972م، عمل في أثناء بعثته مدرسًا للأدب العربي والترجمة بكلية الفلسفة والآداب بجامعة مدريد منذ عام 1968 حتى عام 1972م. تعاقد خلال الفترة نفسها مع المجلس الأعلى للبحث العلمي في إسبانيا للمساهمة في إحياء تراث ابن رشد الفلسفي ونشره.
عمل بعد عودته أستاذًا للأدب والنقد بكُلِّيتي اللغة العربية والبنات بجامعة الأزهر، وعمل أستاذًا زائرًا بكلية المكسيك للدراسات العليا منذ عام 1974م حتى عام 1977م. أنشأ خلال وجوده بالمكسيك قسم اللغة العربية وآدابها بجامعة المكسيك المستقلة عام 1975م.
انتقل للعمل أستاذًا للنقد الأدبي والأدب المقارن بكلية الآداب بجامعة عين شمس منذ عام 1979م حتى الآن. انتدب مستشارًا ثقافيًا لمصر ومديرًا للمعهد المصري للدراسات الإسلامية بمدريد بإسبانيا منذ عام 1980م حتى عام 1985م. رأس في هذه الأثناء تحرير مجلة المعهد المصري للدراسات الإسلامية بمدريد. اختير أستاذًا شرفيًا للدراسات العليا بجامعة مدريد المستقلة.
انتدب بعد عودته إلى مصر عميدًا للمعهد العالي للنقد الفني بأكاديمية الفنون بمصر منذ عام 1985م حتى عام 1988م، وعمل أستاذًا زائرًا بجامعات صنعاء باليمن والبحرين حتى عام 1994م، كما عمل أستاذًا للنقد الأدبي والأدب المقارن بكلية الآداب بجامعة عين شمس ورئيسًا لقسم اللغة العربية وهو الآن أستاذ متفرغ فيها.

وللدكتور صلاح فضل مؤلفات عديدة أثرت المكتبة العربية في الأدب والنقد الأدبي والأدب المقارن وزودت الباحثين برؤى جديدة في الشعر والمسرح والرواية، منها:
