لا زال مفهوم تقويم أداء الطالب مرتبطاً ارتباطاً مباشراً بالامتحانات النهائية والتي من المفروض أن تكون وسيلة وأداة من أدوات ذلك التقويم لا غاية من غاياته. فالامتحانات المدرسية بأوضاعها الحالية من حيث المبالغة في أهميتها، ومجيئها في نهاية الفصل أو العام أو المرحلة، وتأثر النجاح فيها بالحظ بسبب عيوب أساليب بنائها وتصحيحها نثير خوف الطلاب، بل خوف أولياء أمورهم، وليس الخوف بالقدر المعقول كارثة، وإنما يصبح كارثة عندما يتحول إلى رهبة وقلق وضغط نفسي قد يصل ببعض الطلاب في النهاية إلى مرحلة الانهيار أو التسرب.
هذه المرحلة للامتحانات بهذه الصورة لا بد لها أن تنتهي لتحل مكانها امتحانات رسم الباحث في هذا الكتاب صورتها حيث يطالب بارتداء العملية التعليمية والتقويمية بصفة خاصة ثوباً جديداً حاول رسم ملامحه على هذه الصفحات وذلك بطرحه نماذج منوعة لامتحانات حاول تدعيم الجانب النظري منها بتطبيقات عملية لتوضيحها وهدف الباحث هو جعل هذا الكتاب مرجعاً لكل معلم أو موجّه أو متخصص في التربية للبدء في صفحة جديدة نقية تعطي الأمل والصورة المشرقة لأبناء هذا الجيل ولأولياء أمورهم جميعاً.
ويمكن استعراض المحاور التي دار حولها البحث في هذا الكتاب والتي كانت على الشكل التالي: الامتحانات المدرسية في الميزان، تقويم أداء الطالب، صياغة الأهداف السلوكية، أدوات التقويم، أدوات تقويم التحصيل، تقويم السلوك الصفي، تدريس المفاهيم، بناء الاختبارات التحصيلية وتحليل النتائج. وقد عالج الباحث هذه المسائل بأسلوب مبسط ليصبح الكتاب في متناول ومستوى الطلاب قبل المعلمين، والمعلمين قبل المتخصصين في التربية والتقويم.
