يسعى علم النفس إلى فهم السلوك الإنساني ومعرفة آلياته بقصد ضبط السلوك والتنبؤ به قدر الإمكان. لكن علم النفس مثله مثل العلوم الأخرى التي سبقته في الانفصال عن الفلسفة ما زال يحاول تثبيت أقدامه بوصفه علماً لكن الأمر يوحي بشيء من التفاؤل في مستقبل البحث في علم النفس الذي تطور بشكل كبير خلال العقود الأخيرة بما لا يترك مجالاً للشك أنه سيصبح من العلوم الأساسية التي لا تقبل أهمية عن الفيزياء والكيمياء والطب.
في هذا الكتاب مقالات تتناول مواضيع شتى تتناول جميع جوانب علم النفس ومجالاته كتبها رائد التحليل النفسي في العالم العربي للدكتور مصطفى زيور استند فيها إلى خبرته الواسعة وإطلاعه الكبير على حقائق هذا العلم. وهو هنا يضع خبرته أمام القارئ ليشبع فهمه إلى المعرفة وسيلاحظ القارئ أن هذا الكتاب يحوي مقالات ومحاضرات نشرت في مجلات عديدة متخصصة وغير متخصصة، عقد في المقالات مقارنات بين المذاهب الفلسفية ومن ناحية وبين قضايا الطب النفسي والتحلي النفسى وعلم النفس من جهة أخرى.
وقد تناول في هذا القسم علاقة الطب النفسي بالفلسفة المعاصرة ومتطور العلاقة بالموضوع في التحليل النفسي وسيكولوجية التعصب ودراسة في التحليل النفسي الألفى فيها الضوء على المجتمع الإسرائيلي. كما يحوي الكتاب أيضاً بعض الأحاديث الإذاعية المنشورة التي تناولت مواضيع النسيان والأحلام، والقمار ولغة الرمز، وهنري الرابع لشكسبير في ضوء التحليل النفسي، إضافة إلى قسم ثالث يحوي التصديرات التي قدم بها الكثير من الكتب والمؤلفات. وأخيرا حوى الكتاب الدراسات التي ألقاها الدكتور مصطفى زيور في بعض المؤتمرات التي شارك فيها.
