لما كانت سيرة الرسول عليه الصلاة والسلام من مولده إلى وفاته ثابتة ثبوتاً لا فيه، فجميع أفعاله مدونة، وأحاديثه الشريفة مسطورة شاملة، لما يحتاج إليه بنو البشر في أخلاقهم ومعاملاتهم وعبادتهم وفي معاشهم ومعادهم، وحياة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، ملأى بالمثل العليا الكفيلة بإنهاض بني الإنسان وتهذيب نفوسهم وتقويم أخلاقهم وتثقيف عقولهم وإصلاح شؤونهم، فقد كان صلوات الله عليه خير البرية طفلاً وأنجبها كهلاً وأطهر المطهرين شيمة. فهو خير أسوة للفرد في أمته والزوج مع زوجته والأب مع ولده والمربي مع تلميذه والواعظ مع مستمعيه...
كل أولئك يجدون في حياته عليه السلام مثلا يقتدون به وروحاً يسمعون بها عن أدران الفساد والضلال. وهذا ما دفع الشيخ "أحمد عساف" لتدوين سيرة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم في كتابه هذا متحدثاً فيه عن حياة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم منذ ولادته عليه السلام وحتى وفاته، وذلك عبر تقسيمه السيرة إلى حقبات ثلاث: الحقبة الأولى وهي الحقبة الممتدة في ولادته عليه السلام إلى نبوته، الحقبة الثانية تبدأ من نبوته وتنتهي بهجرته إلى المدينة، الحقبة الثالثة وتبدأ من هجرته عليه السلام إلى وفاته.
ولأهمية الكتاب، أهمية موضوعة عني "الشيخ سعد العارف" بتحقيق الكتاب وتجلى عمله أولاً بـ: ضبط نص السيرة مع مقارنتها على أصل السيرة والأحاديث الواردة فيها، ثانياً: ضبط نص الآيات القرآنية وتخريجها وذلك بذكر اسم السورة ورقم الآية، ثالثاً: تخريج الأحاديث بذكر اسم الكتاب والباب ورقم الحديث. رابعاً: شرح الآيات القرآنية مع ذكر أسباب نزولها. خامساً: شرح الألفاظ الغريبة التي يصعب على العامة فهمها، سادساً: ترجمة الإعلام المذكورة مع وضع فهرس لها.
حياة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم مستقاة من سيرة ابن هشام ومن أوثق المصادر وأصحّها، ومكتوبة بأسلوب عصري مبسط سهل التناول في أسلوبه وعرضه، لا يستغني عنه دارس، أو مثقف، أو بيت مسلم يتطلع إلى تربية أسرته على الروح الإسلامية الأصيلة.
