يكتسب تاريخ المغرب والأندلس أهمية كبيرة على إعتباره حلقة من حلقات التاريخ الإسلامي، ولما كان الإسلام خاتم الرسالات السماوية، فقد كان من خصائصه أنه رسالة عالمية للناس كافة، ولأجل هذا وجب على العرب المسلمين حملة الإسلام الأوائل أن يعملوا على تبليغه ونشره لتعم رسالته أرجاء المعمورة، وتحقيقاً لهذا الهدف، خرج المسلمون من الجزيرة العربية مهد الدعوة الإسلامية بإتجاه العراق وفارس والشام ومصر وبلاد المغرب والأندلس، أداء لواجبهم ولإيصال صوت الإسلام إلى تلك الجهات ويعتبر الفتح الإسلامي لبلاد المغرب أحد المواضيع الجديرة بالإهتمام من الدارسين والباحثين، وبالرغم من الكتابات الكثيرة التي كتبت حوله، فإنه يحتاج لمزيد من البحث والتنقيب، وأن تخص كل مرحلة من مراحل هذا الفتح بدراسة وإهتمام خاصين للكشف عما خفي من جوانبه، ولزيادة حقائقه وضوحاً، وأن تعالج معالجة علمية عميقة، تستهدف سبر أغواره، والوصول إلى نتائج مفيدة منه.
لهذا اختار المؤلف هذا الموضوع (الفتح العربي الإسلامي لبلاد المغرب) بمراحله التأسيسية الأولى ليكون مادة هذا الكتاب، لما لذلك من آثار متعددة وهامة على بلاد المغرب وصلتها بالعروبة والإسلام، ولإسهام الفتح العربي الإسلامي لهذه البلاد في التكوين الإجتماعي وفي التشكل والبناء الثقافي ومن ثم تبلور هويتها الحضارية التي ما انفكت إلى اليوم جزءاً حيوياً وفاعلاً في الأمة العربية الإسلامية.
وللإحاطة بالموضوع، تم تقسيم الكتاب إلى خمسة فصول توزعت وفق ما يلي: الفصل الأول: الجغرافية التاريخية، الفصل الثاني: حياة عقبة، الفصل الثالث: ولاية عقبة الأولى على بلاد المغرب، الفصل الرابع: ولاية عقبة الثانية على بلاد المغرب، الفصل الخامس: شخصية عقبة.
