وتشكل هذه المواد المنصهرة المتدفقة مخاريط من الجمر البركاني نتيجة للإنفجارات القوية التي تحدثها أثناء خروجها، وقد يشكل تدفق الحمم البركانية الهادئة بكميات كبيرة من خلال شقوق واسعة سهولاً وهضاباً بركانية.
وتعتبر البراكين مصدراً للهزات والزلازل والكوارث التي تضر بالإنسان ضرراً كبيراً، ولكن بالرغم من ذلك فهي تعطيه التربة الخصبة للزراعة، كما تعتبر البراكين مصدراً غنياً بالمعادن والأحجار النفيسة.
