لا يهدف هذا البحث إلى دراسة المروي له في الرواية العربية عموماً بقدر ما يدوم التعمق في العون السردي انطلاقاً من دراسة بعض النماذج التطبيقية دراسة تأليفية وتجزيئية حرصاً على الإفادة من إيجابيات كلاً الإجرائين. فجاءت الدراسة متكاملة المتن مترابطة الفصول حيث تم تقسيمها إلى فصول خمسة، خصص الأول منها، وهو تمهيدي، للنظر في الأسباب التي أدت إلى قلة الاهتمام بالمروي له ثم لإبراز منزلته في النقد الأدبي الغربي وتدبر المصطلحات المستخدمة في تحديده والوقوف على أسرار تعتيمها وأخيراً للكشف عن طرائق تعامل القصاصين والنقاد معه، غربيين كانوا أو عرباً، قدامى أو محدثين.
واهتم في الفصل الثاني بعلامات المروي له المعلنة أو الناطقة والمضمرة أو الصامتة لما لها من دور أساسي في رسم ملامح صورته. وفي الفصل الثالث، تم تصنيف المروي لهم اعتماداً على التوصل إليه البحث في الفصل السابق. وتناول الفصل الرابع وظائف المروي له داخل الحكاية وخارجها.
