تنقسم المعاملات إلى أربعة أقسام: 1-معاملة الله تعالى، 2-معاملة النفس، 3-معاملة الخلق، 4-معاملة الدنيا. وتعتبر معاملة الله تعالى من أهم أقسام المعاملات لما تمثله من الارتباط الكامل بالغني المطلق الذي بيده خزائن السموات والأرض، ولما تمثله من تحقيق خلافة الله تعالى على الأرض، ومن القيام بالعبودية التي هي غاية الخلق. والعلاقة بالله تتكون من مجموعة من العناصر المتناسقة والمتآلفة كعنصر الخوف من الله، وعنصر الرجاء، والحب، والإخلاص، والتقوى، والصلاة، والدعاء.
هذا وإن من أهم العناصر وأقواها وأبلغها في تقرب الإنسان إلى الله تعالى هو "عنصر العبودية لله تعالى"، فهو غاية خلق الإنسان وهو الأساس لتحقيق الكمال في الإنسان. فعن الإمام جعفر الصادق عليه السلام: "العبودية جوهرة كنهها الربوبية فما فقد في العبودية وجد في الربوبية، وما خفي من الربوبية أصيب في العبودية".
انطلاقاً من هذه الحقيقة فقد عمد المؤلف إلى تأليف هذا الكتاب الذي خصه بسيرة ووصايا الأولياء من الأنبياء والعلماء، ليكون تذكيراً وترغيباً لمن أراد تحقيق العبودية في نفسه. وقد رتبه ضمن المواضيع الآتية: معنى العبادة، أقسام العبادة، حقيقة العبودية وشموليتها ودواعيها ولذتها وأهميتها وآفاتها والسبيل إلى تحقيقها. لينتقل بعد ذلك للحديث عن القدوة في العبادة وقد أورد في ذلك أمثلة نذكرها: عبادة النبي يحيى (ع)، عبادة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، عبادة الإمام علي (ع)، عبادة السيدة فاطمة الزهراء والحسن والحسين والإمام زين العابدين والإمام محمد باقر إلى ما هنالك من نماذج من عبادات أهل البيت وأصحابهم لينهي كتابه هذا بطائفة من الإرشادات ووصايا السير والسلوك إلى الله تعالى.
