موضوع هذا البحث هو بيان محاولة فيلسوف الأندلس التوفيق بين الدين والفلسفة، ومن أن الحقيقة الفلسفية إنما هي معضدة ومساندة للحقيقة الدينية، فإذن يكون من الطبيعي قبل الدخول في موضوع أن نبدأ بإعطاء فكرة عامة عن الأندلس عامة وعن ابن رشد خاصة، وكذلك جهد نشاطه العلمي والفلسفي ليكون هذا موضوع الفصل الأول من البحث.
والفصل الثاني خصص للظروف التي أحاطت بالتكوين العقلي لهذا الفيلسوف والظروف التي أحاطت به، والعوامل التي وجهته وجهته الفلسفية، كذلك تعرض إلى الأساس الفلسفي الذي أفاد منه فيلسوفنا وشاد عليه عمله، كذلك تعرض لموقفه النقدي اتجاه الفلسفة والمتكلمين، والتطرق إلى علاقة ابن رشد بهؤلاء الفلاسفة والمتكلمين، ليكون هذا موضوع الفصل الثاني.
ونصل بعد ذلك إلى الفصل الثالث، وهو الفصل الأساسي والجوهري من هذا البحث، حيث يسعى لبيان مدى اهتمام ابن رشد بناحية التوفيق التي عالجها أسلافه دون أن يقارب واحد منهم مبلغ اهتمامه بها، حتى لقد خصص من تأليفه ثلاثة كتب مهمة: فصل المقال، والكشف عن مناهج الأدلة، وتهافت التهافتـ ثم بين بعد ذلك كيف تتصور العلاقة بين الدين والفلسفة، وعلى أي أسس تقوم هذه الصلة.
كذلك فقد تناول هذا الفصل التأويل المجازي لبعض النصوص الدينية وقواعده، وهو التأويل الذي اعتمده من علم به.
والفصل الرابع الذي يكون فيه الكلام عن تطبيق ما وضع من مبادئ وأصول للأسلوب الذي اعتمده ابن رشد في حل المشكلات الفلسفية العقائدية الدينية التي جاء بها الوحي، استدلالاً يوافق كل طوائف الناس على اختلاف مداركهم وعقولهم ومواهبهم، وذلك في غير ضرر ولا تحيف للدين أو للفلسفة.
