ما هو الطابع العام لأسلوب القرآن، هل هو التشابه أو التنوع؟ وإذا كان فيه تشابه فما هي درجة هذا التشابه؟ أهو تشابه تام، أم تشابه جزئي؟ هذه أسئلة وقف عندها الباحثون في أسلوب القرآن القدامى منهم والمحدثون، على تفاوت في مناهجهم ومشاربهم وزوايا تناولهم للموضوع. ولقد وصف الله-سبحانه وتعالى-كتابه الكريم بقوله: "الله نزل أحسن الحديث كتباً متشبهاً مثاني". فهو متشابه في صحة معانيه وأحكامه وتناسب ألفاظه وأساليبه وتكرار قصصه وأوامره ونواهيه ووعده ووعيده، كما قال الزمخشري في تفسيره للآية السابقة.
ومن هنا تناول المفسرون وعلماء الإعجاز والبلاغة والأسلوب هذه الجوانب المتشابهة من حيث المعاني والصياغة وكانت لهم في هذا المجال مدارس واتجاهات أثمرت ثمار أجنبية من الدراسات القرآنية على مدى القرون الطويلة من تاريخ الإسلام. ولكن معظم الدراسات القرآنية التي تناولت متشابهات القرآن كانت تتناولها على طريقة التفسير التجزيئي بمعنى أنها تتبع المتشابهات حسب تسلسلها في القرآن ابتداءً من سورة الفاتحة حتى سورة الناس، دون أن تجمع المتشابهات التي ينتظمها موضوع واحد فكري أو أسلوبي، مضموني أو شكل، وهو ما سمي في العصر الحديث بالتفسير الموضوعي الذي يتناول واحداً في القرآن ويحشد له النماذج القرآنية كلها دون أن يراعي ترتيبها في القرآن.
وانطلاقاً من هذا المنهج أراد الدكتور "شلتاغ عبود" أن يتناول المتشابهات في القرآن، من الناحية الأسلوبية، فأشار إلى ما ورد في الجمل الفعلية أو الاسمية وما ورد من أساليب التقديم والتأخير والعطف، إضافة إلى موارد التشابه الأخرى في الفواصل والضمائر والصور البيانية.
