بعد الدراسة الأولى حول الإعلام البيئي العربي، التي قدمها نجيب صعب عام 1987 إلى جامعة الدول العربية بتكليف من برنامج الأمم المتحدة للبيئة، وأصبحت المرجع الأهم في هذا الموضوع.
يعود اليوم ليستعرض موقع البيئة في وسائل الإعلام ويحلل مستوى مواضيعها وطرائق معالجتها، الكثير تغيّر خلال عشرين سنة، فتبذل وجه العالم والمنطقة العربية، وتطورت النظرة إلى البيئة والتنمية، فدخلت البيئة بنداً على جدولأعمال الحكومات، وفي حين كنا بالكاد نجد إشارة إلى البيئة في الصحافة العربية، نجد اليوم أن كثيراً من الصحف خصصت صفحات للبيئة، وهي بدأت تدخل في النشرات الإخبارية والتحقيقات والبرامج الحوارية في الإذاعة والتلفزيون؛ فضلاً عن ثورة المعلومات التي أطلقتها شبكة الإنترنت.
تحصي الدراسة نحو خمسين مجلة ونشرة دورية ذات عناوين بيئية، وعشرات الصفحات البيئية في الصحف اليومية، ومئات مواقع البيئة على الإنترنت، وتثبت نماذج من صفحاتها ومضامينها.
لكنها أيضاً تحلل المحتوى والمعالجة، وتقترح خطة عمل لتطوير هوية الإعلام البيئي العربي، الذي ما برح معظمه في طور الهواية، وتحويله إلى إحتراف، أما القسم الأخير من الكتاب فيحتوي على مختارات من مقالات إفتتاحية نشرها نجيب صعب خلال السنوات الثلاث الماضية في "البيئة والتنمية" وثماني صحف عربية، وكان لها أثر في السياسات والبرامج البيئية لحكومات عربية ومنظمات.
