كل المحاولات الاستعمارية المغرضة، لم تنجح في طمس معالم التراث الإفريقي، فلا زالت هناك بقايا من حكايات وأساطير الشعوب الإفريقية، تعكس أفكارها الإنسانية وتصوراتها في مختلف مجالات الحياة، وإذا كان الجانب الأكبر من هذا التراث الشعبي الإفريقي قد ضاع بسبب "خفوت دقات الطبول" التي كانت تمثل للإفريقي حروف الكتابة بالنسبة لأي شعب آخر، كما كانت عند الإفريقيين أسرع الوسائل لنقل المعلومات وأقدرها على النشر والإبلاغ إلى أكبر عدد ممكن من الناس.. إلا أنه ما يزال هناك كثيرون من المخلصين من أبناء القارة من المهتمين بدراسة التراث الإفريقي يعملون جهدهم على جمع ما بقي من هذا التراث، لكي يكون صورة حية للضمير الإفريقي ، وللفكر الإفريقي، وكل ذلك يتم في مرحلة من التاريخ تحتاج منا نحن أبناء هذه القارة المجيدة إلى كشف كل الأستار التي أسدلها الاستعماريون على تاريخ القارة وحضارتها.
وهذه "الحكايات الإفريقية" التي يقدمها الكاتب ليست في الحقيقة إلا صورة من حياة الإفريقي الفكرية والروحية والاجتماعية. وهي مهما بعدت عن الواقع، إلا أنها تمثل الحقيقة التي كان يعيش فيها إنسان هذه القارة. فليست كل الحقائق شيئاً ملموساً، بل إن الحقائق قد تكون شيئاً محسوساً أيضا. وإذا كانت هذه الحقائق ليست إلا حقائق قديمة.. حقائق ذلك تؤكد أن التاريخ ليس فقط تاريخ الحروب والغزوات والأسر المالكة، ولكنه أيضاً تاريخ الشعوب.. والشعوب لا تنحصر صفاتها فيما كانت تمارسه فقط من ماديات الحياة، بل وأيضاً من معنوياتها وخيالاتها. وبعض هذا في الحقيقة.. هو ما يحاول أن يعرضه هذا الكتاب.
