تدور الدراسات التي يشتمل عليها هذا الكتاب على طائفة من القضايا الفلسفية الكبرى التي تعني طالب الفكر العربي، بوجهيه الفلسفي والديني، وإذا استثنينا بعض جوانب هذا الفكر التي لم يعرض المؤلف بإسهاب، أمكن القول أنها تؤلف بسطاً شاملاً لهذا الفكر، منذ القرن التاسع حتى يومنا هذا، ومع أنها صدرت في عدد من المجلات العربية والإنكليزية بين سنة 1953 و1969، فهي تتصف بوحدة الموضوع والنفس وتقع في ثلاثة أقسام مترابطة الأجزاء: القس الأول يدور حول أثر الفكر اليوناني في تطور الفلسفة العربية، والقسم الثاني يدور حول التفاعل بين الفكر الديني الإسلامي والفلسفة، ووجوه الصلة بينهما، والقسم الثالث يدور حول معالم الفكر الفلسفي والديني المعاصر، ولا سيما الدراسات الفلسفية في القرن العشرين والتيارات الفكرية الكبرى في الشرق العربي اليوم.
أما مقالة "اكتشاف الإنسان العربي" التي ختم بها المؤلف هذه الدراسات، فتعرض لمسألة ذات شأن هام في تاريخ الفكر الفلسفي العام، وهي بزوغ فكرة الإنسان، ومتضمنات هذه الفكرة وأهميتها بالنسبة إلى تطور الفكر العربي والمشاغل السياسية والخلقية التي تهم المفكر العربي اليوم.
