يحتوي هذا الكتاب على ثمانين نباتاً كل نبات منها وضع أولاً: على مجهر البحث العلمي حين رصد المؤلف ظاهرة التمعن والاستغراء وهي ظاهرة تعدد الأسماء العلمية، هذه الظاهرة حرصت الدراسة على استجلائها والوقوف عليها: فتارة توضح الاختلاف بين اسم وآخر، وتارة تصحح عيباً وغموضاً في الاسم وتارة توضح السقط أو الحذف الذي أصابه. ولقد ركز المؤلف على الجوانب العلمية لنبات فوصفه وتحدث عن وظيفته وخصائصه ثم لخص من ذلك ما أراده الشاعر من غرض حين عمد إلى هذا النبات دون سواه من النباتات الأخرى.
