تعد القنوات الفضائية أحد مظاهر الثورة التكنولوجية الحديثة، ووسيلة اتصال معاصرة تتميز بالفاعلية والشيوع والكونية. وهذا يؤدي من وجهة نظر "انتوني جيدنز" إلى فصل المكان عن الهوية، والقفز فوق الحدود الثقافية للمجتمعات والتقليل من مشاعر الانتساب والانتماء.
لم يكن علماء سوسيولوجيا الاتصال بمعزل عن هذه المستجدات التي تمخضت عن التغير السريع في تكنولوجيا الاتصال خلال نهاية القرن العشرين وبداية القرن الحادي والعشرين، حيث اتجهت أبحاثهم إلى دراسة هذه المستجدات على المسارين النظري والتطبيقي، إلا أنه بالرغم من ذلك لم تكن إسهاماتهم في دراسة الوسائل الحديثة كالانترنت والقنوات الفضائية بنفس القدر الذي حظيت به الوسائل التقليدية للاتصال، مما يفرض ضرورة دراسة القنوات الفضائية وتحديد تأثيراتها.
يأتي الكتاب في بابين يتضمنان ستة فصول: الباب الأول يعرض للأسس النظرية للدراسة ويتضمن ثلاثة فصول، يقدم الفصل الأول أهداف الدراسة ومفهوماتها الأساسية، ويقدم الفصل الثاني المداخل النظرية المفسرة لتأثير الاتصال. ويقدم الفصل الثالث استعراضًا نقديًا للدراسات السابقة المرتبطة بموضوع الدراسة. أما الباب الثاني فيقدم خطة الدراسة الميدانية ونتائجها ويتضمن أربعة فصول فيقدم الفصل الرابع خطة الدراسة الميدانية، أما الفصل الخامس فيعرض لنتائج مشاهدة القنوات الفضائية على القيم القرابية، وفي الفصل السادس يتضح تأثير مشاهدة القنوات الفضائية على القيم السياسية، ثم مناقشة للنتائج العامة للدراسة، بجانب مجموعة من التوصيات التطبيقية والبحثية.
