نسعى هنا في هذا الكتاب إلى تبيّن مسالك جديدة في دراسة فكر الفارابي وفهمه، ولذلك ننظر في علاقة الفيلسوف بعلوم الإسلام التاريخيّة، لنرى كيف عالج هذه العلوم الحادثة ونظّر لها تنظيرًا فلسفيًّا بانتمائه إلى مرجعيّة قديمة، فصاغ المسائلَ النظريّةَ والعمليّةَ واقترح حلولها. ولئن كان هذا عملاً طبيعيًّا للفيلسوف في علاقة الفلسفة بالتاريخ، فإنّه يجب أن نضيف إليه استحداث الفارابي لمَوَاضعَ أو نظريّاتٍ أو مصطلحاتٍ غريبةٍ عن الأصُول اليونانيّة وشرُوحاتها الهلّينستيّة في ترجمتها العربيّة.
ويقوم هذا العمل على فرضيّة التّمييز بين عُنصُرين أساسيّين متلازمين، وتحديد العلاقة التي تربط بينهما. وهذان العُنْصُرَان هما: فلسفة الفارابي التأمّليّة من ناحية، وفيها يُطالب بتَبَنّي سُنّة القُدامى العريقة في معرفة الحقيقة وفي الطّريق إليها، ومُعطيات تاريخ الفكر الدّيني الفعْليّ ومنها عدَدٌ من العُلوم الإسلاميّة بصفة خاصّة، من ناحية ثانية.
ويتّضح لنا بذلك معنى التّفلسف، أي النّظرُ وفْقَ مُحدّداتٍ مُعَيّنةٍ تنتمي إلى تقليدٍ نظريٍّ مخصوص، وكيفيّةُ صياغةِ معطياتِ الفكر الدّينيّ وعلومه حسب ما يقتضيه هذا الانتماء النّظريّ. وخصّصنا وفق هذا التوجّه دراسة إطاريّة وهي الفارابي وفلسفة الدين، ودراسات مطبّقة على مسائل معيّنة وهي: الفقه وأصوله، وعلم الكلام وأصول الدين، ومفهوم التقدير في الفلسفة وفي الكلام، وتصنيف المدن وعلم الفرَق، وكتاب مبادئ آراء أهل المدينة الفاضلة: مضمونه وطبيعته.
