استخدم المصريون القدماء الزيوت العطرية على نطاق واسع في ترتيبات الطقوس الدينية فى كبرى الاحتفالات ذات الطابع السياسي أو الديني أو الجنائزى، فقد كانت هذه المواد فى نظرهم معروفة لفوائدها الناجعة عند أداء بعض الشعائر، وفي مقدمتها تلك التى كانت ترتبط باستعادة الحياة وتجديدها. فكانت تحمي المتوفي وتبقية على قيد الحياة لذلك نجدها ضمن متاعة الجنائزي او مذكورة فى تصاوير المقابر أو في نصوص الشعائر الجنائزية أو مصنفاتها. ومن جهة اخرى فإنها تقوم بدور على قدر كبير من الأهمية فى كبرى شعائر احتفالات تتويج الملوك. وكانت الغاية من استخدامها وقائية ومقدسة.ويقع على عاتقها تدعيم المؤسسة الملكية وتقوية الملك جسديا. وعلى صعيد الخدمة الإلهية اليومية كان مسح تماثيل الآلهة بهذه الزيوت العطرية يضمن التجديد اليومي لحياتهاوعودة النشاط إليها.
