إن علم أصول الفقه من أشرف العلوم وأعلاها؛ إذ إنه العلم الذى يتوصل به إلى معرفة أحكام الله تعالى التي فرضها على عباده، فهو العلم الذى تتفرع وتتشابك من شجرته الأحكام، من غير أن تؤثر هذه الأحكام في قواعده الثابتة وأصوله الراسخة. ولما كان الإمام ابن دقيق العيد من أجل علماء الأصول وأعلاهم كعباً، فقد توجهت الهمة إلى دراسة آراء هذا العالم المجدد الأصولي، وتدوين تلك الآراء من خلال هذا العمل المتميز؛ مما يساعد في دفع عجلة دراسة القواعد الأصولية بصفة عامة، ومعرفة المراحل العلمية لجمع الآراء الفقهية بصفة خاصة.
والذي يضاعف من أهمية هذا العمل أنه يجمع آراء ابن دقيق العيد الأصولية من خلال شروحه الحديثية، وتعرضه أثناء ذلك للفروع الفقهية المستنبطة من الأحاديث؛ فجاءت الآراء الأصولية متشابكة مع الفروع الفقهية، وجاءت الفروع الفقهية كنماذج تطبيقية لهذه القواعد.
