حظيت مسائل العقيدة باهتمام العلماء قديماً وحديثاً خاصة ما يتعلق منها بذات الله عز وجل وصفاته العلية حيث كان الحديث في ذلك مثار جدل عنيف حصل بين طوائف الأمة الإسلامية سيما بعد ظهور مدرسة علم الكلام التي أبعدت كثيراً من المسلمين عن مصدر عقيدتهم الصحيحة من الكتاب والسنة. ومن المعلوم أن القرآن الكريم مكث ينزل على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ثلاثة وعشرين عاماً والرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم يبلغه للناس ويبينه حتى كمل الدين وتمّت النعمة. وكان الصحابة رضوان الله عليهم يسمعون القرآن ويفهمون معناه، ثم يؤمنون به ويعملون بشرائعه.
ومما نزل به القرآن الأخبار عن ذات الله عزّ وجل وأسمائه وصفاته وأفعاله واليوم الآخر والجنة والنار. ونحن نعتقد أنهم كانوا يفهمون ما يخاطبون به من ذلك كله وإلا سألوا عنه واستفسروا عن معناه لتعلقه بالجانب الأهم من دينهم، وهو جانب الاعتقاد الذي هو جوهر الدين وأساسه، وهذا الجانب هو الذي كتب فيه فضيلة الشيخ "الطيب بن عمر بن الحسين الجكني" كتابه المسمى "العقيدة السلفية والرد على المنحرفين عنها" وقد وضح فيه مذهب السلف في أسماء الله وصفاته، ومسمى الإيمان، وفي قضايا مهمة في التوحيد، مع توضيحه لمعنى السلف والسلفية، والرد على الفرق التي انحرفت عن مذهب السلف، سواءً كان انحرافها قليلاً أم كثيراً، كما وضح فضيلته أن الميزان الحقيقي، لوزن الأمور الشرعية والعقدية هو الكتاب والسنة، وبين أن الكلام والفلسفة لا خير فيهما، وأن الشريعة غنية عنهما، وبيّن منشأ الخطأ والانحراف في الأمة، كل ذلك بأسلوب سهل واضح، وبعبارات جيدة لا شطط فيها، كما أنه أنصف المخالفين في أغلب عباراته، ورد عليهم بأسلوب توخى فيه المنهجية والموضوعية.
