منذ خراب البيت الأول، وعلى امتداد مئات السنين استمرت علاقة مهاجري بابل قائمة بالأرض المقدسة، كانت هذه رابطة دينية - مسائية عبَّرت عن نفسها في صلواتهم، في أفراحهم وأتراحهم وفي حنينهم وتشوقهم الى صهيون، علاقات المهاجرين الثقافية مع الاستيطان اليهودي استمرت حتى القرن الثالث عشر، الهجرة من بابل، والتبرعات لمؤسسات البر والإحسان في فلسطين لم تنقطع قريباً، كل ذلك لدوافع دينية.
منذ نهاية القرن التاسع عشر بدأت الصهيونية السياسية تدخل وعي البعض من يهود العراق، وجنباً إلى جنب مع ذلك ازدادت الهجرة من هذه الدولة إلى فلسطين. ولم تكن دائماً الحوافز الصهيونية وراء هجرة حوالي عشرة آلاف يهودي من العراق منذ عام 1919 وحتى قيام الدولة، ووراء هجرة أكثر من 120 ألف إلى اسرائيل يشكلون الغالبية العظمى من يهود العراق خلال الفترة الواقعة بين 1948 - 1951 في عملية "عزرا وغاميا".
إن النشاط الصهيوني في العراق بين عام 1898 - 1935 لم يستطع أن يتبلور ليشكل حركة ذات تأثير على يهود الدولة - وذلك بسبب عدة عوامل - الى أن أصيب هذا النشاط بالشلل عام 1935 - 1942
معظم هذا الكتاب مخصص للفترة الواقعة بين عام 1898 - 1942 وللمرة الأولى نعتمد على وثائق أصلية لم تنشر حتى الآن لنوضح صبغة النشاط الصهيوني في دولة عربية اعتبر سكانها وسلطاتها هذا النشاط نشاطاً معادياً وغير مرغوب فيه. وسوف نتعرض في هذا الكتاب أيضاً للمنظمات والشخصيات، للنجاح والفشل، للصعوبات والتخبطات.
خلال أعوام 1942 - 1951 اشتد نشاط الحركة الصهيونية في العراق بحيث أصبحت معه الحركة الصهيونية متطورة أكثر من الفترة السابقة. غير أن صبغة هذا النشاط غدت تختلف تماماً خاصة لكونه أصبح سرياً، ولأن القائمين عليه كانوا معرضين لأقصى العقوبات. لذلك فقد امتنعنا عن الخوض في التفاصيل كي لا يتضرر الأشخاص الذين ما زالوا يعيشون في العراق أو خارجه.
