في هذا الكتاب يعالج الدكتور "راشد المبارك" مسألة الفلسفة من خلال دراسته حالات فلسفية كبرى استوقفته كباحث، وهي ظاهرة تكاد تكون ملازمة لكل الفلاسفة وفي كل العصور. ألا وهي ما يسميه الفلاسفة "كشوفاً أو نظريات" يفسرون بها الكون في بدئه وصيرورته، والإنسان في مبدئه وغايته.
تضمن الكتاب سبعة فصول. الفصول الأولى الستة جاءت كدراسة حالة لعدد من الفلاسفة الكبار، بدءاً من أفلاطون فأرسطو ومروراً بديكارت إلى سبينوزا وامانويل كنط وحتى شوبنهاور.
وقد خصص المؤلف لكل حالة من الحالات السابقة فصلا ًكاملاً مستقلاً، أما الفصل السابع فحمل ورقة فلسفية، جاءت تحت عنوان: هل العقل شاهد زور؟ بالإضافة إلى مقدمة المؤلف التي جاءت مدخلاً وتمهيداً لمعالجة هذا الموضوع الشائك في قضية فلسفية تتطلب من الباحث ومن القارىء الوعي بأبعادها.
يعيب راشد المبارك على الفلاسفة وقوعهم في منحدر التقريرية والوثوق وفي هذا يقول: "... الفلسفة تفارق مسلكها القديم؛ وهو اعتمادها في الوصول إلى المعرفة على وسيلة واحدة من وسائل الكشف عنها وهو التأمل المحض القائم على المسلمات الأولى للعقل، والمعطيات الحسية ليست سوى مادة يختار منها العقل اللبنات الملائمة لبنائه، إن أحدهم يتراءى له تصوّر أو رأي أو وهم فيتحول بين يديه إلى اكتشاف كوني يعطيه كل الحقيقة بكل التأكيد والوثوق، وأكثر ما يدعو إلى الدهشة في هذا التوجه أمران:
الأول: أن ما كشفه الزمن من أخطاء السلف في آرائهم وتقريراتهم يمنع الخلف من القوع في نفس الخطأ من التقرير والوثوق.
الثاني: أن وجود آراء آنية معارضة تمام المعارضة لما يصل له واحد منهم يحمل الآخر على مراجعة خزانته؛ لمعرفة ما فيها من زائف أو أصيل (...)".
دراسة هامة، تستجلي أبعاد ظاهرة فلسفية كبرى في نشأة الكون والإنسان تقترب من ذات الباحث، وثقافته، اعتبر فيها أن العقل موضع خطاب الأديان ورسالات العقل نفسه ومنبع فيض الفلسفة وحقل نبات للأفكار والمعارف تجعلنا كمسلمين في موضع أفضل لفهم دلالات ما جاء في كتاب الله "القرآن الكريم "من آيات من مثل قوله تعالى" إنما يخشى الله من عباده العلماء".
