لقد كان المعالم الصغري Intel 80386 أكثر رقائق وحدات المعالجة المركزية (cpu) تداولاً على الأرجح منذ تقديم المعالج 8080 في أوائل عهد الحوسبة الشخصية. وكشفت الطبعة الأولى لهذا الكتاب قدرات المعالج 80386. ولكن منذ ذلك الحين أنزلت شركة Intel corporation إلى الأسواق ثلاثة معالجات إضافية بنفس البنية التصميمية الأساسية. وتشمل عائلة المعالجات 80386 الآن المعالج الأصلي 80386 والمعالج sx 80386 و80376 والمعالج الأجدد والأسرع في تلك العائلة وهو المعالج 80486. ولقد تم توسيع هذا الكتاب ليبين ويصف الفروقات ما بين هذه المعالجات.
يقدم الفصل الأول تاريخ عائلة المعالجات الصغرية 86x. ويشرح كل فصل لاحق قسماً من النية التصميمية للمعالج 80386/80486 ويجري تقديم تنظيم وحدة المعالجة المركزية (cpu) في الفصل الثاني. أما الفصل الثالث فيشرح البنية التصميمية للذاكرة الأساسية. ويقدم الفصل الرابع مجموعة الإيعازات الأساسية ومجموعة إيعازات الأعداد الطليقة النقطة (floating point) يشرح الفصل الخامس عملية النمط المحمي. ويبلغك الفصل السادس كيف يتم تعيين الصفحات (paging) بتوسيع نظام الذاكرة وكيف تعمل الذاكرة الانتقالية (cache) في المعالج 80486. التوافقية مع المعالجات السابقة عبر النمط الحقيقي والنمط 8086 الوهمي والنمط المحمي للمعالج 80286، جميعها مشروحة في الفصل السابع. وأخيراً يكون الفصل الثامن مرجع شامل لمجموعة الإيعازات. يركز هذا الكتاب كلياً على موضوع البرمجة. وهو لا يشرح مزايا عتاد (hard ware) المعالج إلا إذا كانت تلك المزايا تتعلق بإيعازات معينة.
