كنت أعاني من زيادة وزني معظم فترة شبابي، وأصبح (الحجم) موضوعاً أساسياً لي. ولم تكن المشكلة هي في عدم قدرتي على السيطرة على وزني، فقط، ولكنني كنت قد وصلت إلى نقطة أصبح وزني هو الذي يسيطر عليّ. كان الموضوع يلاحقني، وأصبح هاجساً أصابني بالإحباط والاكتئاب. فكنت أتناول طعاماً لكي أشعر بالتحسن؛ ثم فجأة وجدت نفسي أرتدي حجم 46. ورغم أن حجمي أصبح في الحقيقة 46، لكنني لم أستطع تقبّل هذه الحقيقة وشراء أو خياطة ملابس لي بذلك الحجم الكبير والقبيح. لذا، كانت النتيجة أنني لم أعد أملك أي ملابس مناسبة لكي أرتديها! وأصبح الخروج من المنزل همّاً كبيراً.
وفي عام 1986، افتتحنا أنا وزوجي محلاً للأقمشة والخياطة التي كانت هواية وعملاً أحببته دوماً. ولكني، حين أعود الآن بذاكرتي إلى الوراء، لا أستطيع أن أصدق كيف غيّر ذلك القرار حياتي كلها. فلكي أذهب إلى عملي يومياً، كان عليّ ارتداء ملابس لائقة ومناسبة-لذا، ورغم كرهي الشديد لمظهري وشكلي-فقد اضطررت لإعداد بعض الملابس التي تناسب حجمي.
وإذا قلت إنني لم أكن متحمسة لذلك العمل، فإنني لن أعطي صورة حقيقية لما كنت أشعر به عند تسجيل قياسات جسمي البدين المفرط الوزن. ثم خياطة شيء بحجم 46 المخيف! أجل أجل… حقاً كنت أفضَل أي شيء على ذلك. ولكن، لم يكن أمامي من حلّ إلاَ صنع بعض الملابس التي تناسبني.
ثم حدث ما لم أكن أتوقعه. فقد ظهرت بمظهر لائق كنت أحلم به منذ سنوات مضت، وأصبحت أنتظر الصباح بلهفة لأرتدي ملابسي الجميلة الأنيقة؛ والشعور بالرضا عن نفسي ومظهري يملؤني. وبين حين وآخر، كنت أستمع إلى إطراء من أحد زبائني، يمتدح بها ذوقي في اختيار شكل ملابسي أو نسيجها. لم أصدَق ذلك!
صار الآخرون يتعاملون معي، بكلّ رقة وصداقة! كنت ما أزال بدينة؛ ولكن نظرتي إلى نفسي تغيّرت لأن مظهري أصبح مقبولاً وبالتالي ارتفعت معنوياتي وزالت مشاكلي النفسية.
